The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 is a law in India that aims to prevent atrocities and hate crimes against members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The Act includes the following features: Definition of atrocities Section 3 of the Act defines 22 types of offenses that are considered atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Special courts The Act provides for special courts to try offenses against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Application The Act applies to the whole of India except for Jammu and Kashmir. Amendments The Act has been amended to broaden the definition of atrocities and tighten legal safeguards. The Supreme Court has ruled that not every insult against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes can be considered an offense under the Act. अनुसूचित जाति और अनुसूचित जनजाति (अत्याचार निवारण) अधिनियम, 1989 भारत में एक कानून है जिसका उद्देश्य अनुसूचित जाति और अनुसूचित जनजाति के सदस्यों के विरुद्ध अत्याचार और घृणा अपराधों को रोकना है। इस अधिनियम में निम्नलिखित विशेषताएँ शामिल हैं: अत्याचार की परिभाषा अधिनियम की धारा 3 में 22 प्रकार के अपराधों को परिभाषित किया गया है जिन्हें अनुसूचित जातियों और अनुसूचित जनजातियों के विरुद्ध अत्याचार माना जाता है। विशेष न्यायालय इस अधिनियम में अनुसूचित जातियों और अनुसूचित जनजातियों के विरुद्ध अपराधों की सुनवाई के लिए विशेष अदालतों का प्रावधान है। आवेदन यह अधिनियम जम्मू और कश्मीर को छोड़कर सम्पूर्ण भारत पर लागू होता है। संशोधन अत्याचार की परिभाषा को व्यापक बनाने तथा कानूनी सुरक्षा उपायों को कड़ा करने के लिए अधिनियम में संशोधन किया गया है। यह अधिनियम भारतीय संसद द्वारा 1989 में अधिनियमित किया गया था।
